Yorkshire based supermarket giant Morrisions is planning to bolster it’s presence in the South East and London by buying 49 Blockbuster’s stores.
Morrisons, who are based in Bradford, are going to use the stores to build a new convenience store franchise.
It’s thought that 1,000 jobs will be created by the ‘Morrisons M’ stores. The 49 stores are part of the 164 that their administrators said would be closed.
Gordon Mowat, head of Morrisons convenience, said: “We are rolling out the Morrisons M local estate at pace this year, and these acquisitions give us a kick-start in securing a solid foothold in this key sector.
“The convenience market is growing, as more people shop locally and we want to be in a position to take advantage of this.”
