News that Amazon are expanding their operations into the B2B sector will send a shudder down the spine of business owners particularly those dealing in office supplies!
The announcement this week that Amazon, famous for its online shopping, TV and movie offerings is about to move into the office supply space is unlikely to be welcomed by smaller competitors.
Yet this is only the latest in a long line of threats to SMEs that shows no signs of lessening. The reality is Internet giants are steadily putting more and more companies out of business or at the very least threatening to reduce their balance sheets.
So what can a business do to protect against the threat of competitors with more reach and almost unlimited marketing resources?
The answer is very little other than to innovate and find new ways to better serve customers. This means continuous investment in improving products and giving value for money.
Rather than join the race to the bottom on prices as many companies attempt to do, it is better to work harder on re-packaging the core offering so that it appeals to buyers who prefer a better and more personal service to simply going for the cheapest option.
